The Day of Slavonic Writing

Release date: May 25, 2009

On May 23 on the threshold of the All-Russian festival of Slavonic writing and culture the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy hosted the Day of Slavonic Writing paying tribute to the developers of Cyrillic alphabet, SS. Cyril and Methodius.

A special educational programme “Slavonic writing. Origination, history and development” was prepared for the orphan children from Moscow asylum #7 and children from needy families being under trusteeship of secondary general school #4 of the town of Voskresensk.
The children were shown a Discovery Channel documentary which told the history of development of writing from clay tablets to the high-end computers.

Professor Georgy Kozubov, PhD, member of the Russian Union of Artists, made a report concerning the ancient art of calligraphy.
A special guest of the festival, People’s Artist of Russia, prize-winner of the Iliya Repin State Art & Literature Award, acting member of the Russian Academy of arts, Dmitry Zhilinsky told about the important role of writing in development of the world visual art.

Priest of the Church of St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, father Pavel Dorofeyev told about the important role of Orthodox Christianity in origination and development of Slavonic writing.

Moscow graphic artist Yury Koverdyayev and calligraphy artists Tatiana Petrenko from St. Petersburg gave an exciting master class. The children were able to learn about the origination of writing in Old Rus, see various handwritten forms of Cyrillic and try writing uncial Slavonic letters. Some of them did it really well.

The children inspired by artistic work sharing their impressions during a tea-party served by MVK International Exhibition Company.

We hope that next year the educational projects of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy prepared for the Days of Slavonic Writing and Culture will become a part of the official programme of the Government of Moscow and International Fund of Slavonic Writing and Culture.
